Rio 2016 Olympics: Vanderlei de Lima lights the cauldron

Brazilian marathon runner Vanderlei de Lima is tasked with lighting the cauldron at the 2016 Rio Olympics Amid the pomp and ceremony which greets the arrival of an Olympic Games one thing is always certain – the cauldron will be lit. While those present at the Maracana for the occasion and the billions watching on were treated to a show depicting Brazil’s early beginnings and climate change, you know the competition really is underway when the last leg of the torch route is complete. Carried by many along the journey from its ancient home in Olympia, Greece, the flame was safely transferred from the Christ the Redeemer statue to the ceremony, where local hero and 2004 bronze medallist Vanderlei de Lima was waiting to light the cauldron. | Metro News via IFTTT
