Two dogs die and others collapse in heat at Pet Fair Asia in Shanghai
Two dogs died and more than a dozen suffered heatstroke after their owners brought them to a large pet convention despite warnings not to do so. Organisers of Pet Fair Asia, which was founded in 1997, asked those attending to keep their animals at home, but owners nevertheless dragged their pets along and stood in the 35C heat of Shanghai. A number of dogs began to collapse and have difficulty breathing. Some owners, who saw what was happening to the dogs, splashed their own pets with cold water to try and alleviate the symptoms of heatstroke. Two dogs died, according to reports, and many more more collapsed in the heat. The organisers of the three-day fair told local media that those who brought their animals lacked ‘basic knowledge’ of pet care. Pet ownership is growing in China and the surrounding countries as a consequence of the booming middle class. | Metro News via IFTTT
