It's the sand man! Incredible giant human face appears in the dunes of the Namibian desert *** The profile of a face suddenly appears in a giant sand dune in one of the oldest deserts on the planet. But it is actually an amazing optical illusion, and when photographed from a different angle the face completely disappears. Valerio Leone captured the remarkable photo from a helicopter while on holiday with his family in Namibia. The 56-year-old, from Monaco, got in the chopper to fly over the Namib Desert, a giant strip of sand dunes which runs down the entire Namibian coast and is estimated to be millions of years old. Mr Leone said: 'This is probably the oldest desert on earth, experts say it is dated 80 milion years. It felt like I was in a different world.' Shading in the sand creates an eye, the outline of a big nose, and a slightly open mouth - as if a man's head is being viewed from the side. Mr Leone said: 'My 23-year-old daughter noticed the face first - and to be honest we only saw it when we were looking at the pictures on my laptop. 'I was surprised to see how the wind can paint the desert dunes with an image like this that reminds you of a face.' Valerio, a semi-retired CEO of a bicycle company, said: 'It was a great feeling to take these photographs, we were really enjoying the landscape.'
