Man arrested after girl, 2, 'is genitally mutilated at home'

A man has been arrested over the alleged female genital mutilation of a two-year-old girl – the first case of its kind in Dublin. The Somalian national, in his 30s, is currently being quizzed by police over the barbaric butchery, which is banned in Ireland. It is believed the girl is undergoing treatment in hospital, reports The Mirror. Specialist police teams in white forensic outfits combed the first floor flat in Crumlin, South Dublin on Friday morning. One source told The Mirror: ‘This Somalian man was taken into custody on suspicion of mutilating a child.’ A neighbour told The Mirror they were ‘shocked’ to see the police arrive. ‘The kids are not even five years, they are younger,’ they added. The man is currently detained at Sundrive Garda Station, say police. The maximum penalty for performing FGM is a fine of up to €10,000 (around £8,600) or up to 14 years in prison. | Metro News via IFTTT
